The gym
A gym with basketball history
Its official name is Sporthalle Charlottenburg; Berlin knows it as Sömmeringhalle. Built in 1965 to plans by Ludwig Leo and now a listed building: bright, functional, with about 2,500 seats close to the court.
This is where Berlin basketball grew up. ALBA Berlin, which came out of BG Charlottenburg, made its name in this gym between 1990 and 1997. In 2022 ALBA came back with its women’s team.
Today Berlin Dreams play their home games here.
The neighbourhood
The Mierendorff-Insel
The gym sits on the Mierendorff-Insel in the north of Charlottenburg, framed by the Spree, the Westhafenkanal and the Charlottenburger Verbindungskanal. A quiet residential neighbourhood where everything is close.
Its heart is Mierendorffplatz: laid out in 1912 and named after the politician Carlo Mierendorff in 1950. The U7 stops here, and the gym is a few hundred metres away.
Got time before the game? Charlottenburg Palace and the Spree are not far.
